There's a lot of overwrought "I'm attracted to you, but I shouldn't be, but I am, but I can't be!" dialogue for a long time before the characters get together and then they talk to each other like. They were having a normal conversation and suddenly Deacon was in a rage for no apparent reason. There's a scene relatively early on where Deacon fights with his sister in a restaurant, and I had to rewind the book three or four times because for the life of me I couldn't understand what set off the fight. And the dramatics! Both Deacon and Julian are inclined to get super melodramatic about the least little thing. I'm not limiting this to Deacon and Julian, the two protagonists, either Deacon's straight, mechanic friend talks like a woman in her forties giving her friends advice. I think the most glaring issue for me is that the characters simply do not speak to each other or behave like actual men would. Luckily, with a good narrator, I can get over it pretty easily, and as I previously mentioned, both narrators were superb here. This may not bug some people, but it's a huge pet peeve of mine. The minor issue is that the book is written entirely in present tense. I had three main issues, one minor and two major. However, the novel itself, for me at least, left a lot to be desired. And let me get it out of the way immediately: both Teddy Hamilton and Tim Paige were flawless. I actually pre-ordered this title I'll buy any m/m romance novel narrated by Teddy Hamilton, even though they're few and far between. He's not joking when he calls 'em 'tiny', either. (Which made him feel pretty smug, as you can probably imagine.)įorty-three brilliantly strange - and strangely brilliant - stories by Nick Parker make up this extremely funny, quietly surreal and sometimes worryingly sinister collection which doesn't quite slot into any literary category at all. a tremendous collection which sets the bar extremely high.' Bookmunch These forty two short, funny and sometimes strange short stories ask the questions that are on everybody's lips: Why did the national anthem turn out rubbish? Why has the supply teacher blacked out all the windows? Why have the islanders run amok like that? Where do those ladders go, anyway? And what, exactly, is up with all the walruses? Parker's brilliantly bizarre stories have been compared to George Saunders, Magnus Mills, Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Donald Barthelme and Richard Brautigan. 'Creepily brilliant' The Mail on Sunday 'Fit to rub shoulders with the likes of Richard Brautigan. Just what the form is for.' John Mitchinson, author of QI: The Book of General Ignorance. 'I bloody LOVE these stories: short, clever, oblique. Proof that the short story is still a public good.' Ian Sansom, The Guardian. forty two short, swift, crowd-pleasing stories. After her mother dies, Loup goes to live among the misfit orphans at the parish church, where they seethe from the injustices visited upon the locals by the soldiers. The "Wolf-Men" were engineered to have superhuman strength, speed, sensory capability, stamina, and a total lack of fear, and Loup, named for and sharing her father's wolf-like qualities, is marked as an outsider. A fugitive "Wolf-Man" who had a love affair with a local woman, Loup's father was one of a group of men genetically-manipulated and used by the US government as a weapon. Loup Garron was born and raised in Santa Olivia, an isolated, disenfranchised town next to a US military base inside a DMZ buffer zone between Texas and Mexico. Lushly written with rich and vivid characters, SANTA OLIVIA is Jacqueline Carey's take on comic book superheroes and the classic werewolf myth. While many critics have praised Beautiful World as Rooney’s best yet, its Goodreads reviews are pockmarked with people irked by its conclusion (“Loved right until the last ten pages,” said one. Did the master of nuance and inner conflict really go for a neat, happy ending? When I realized I had read the last words - “I’m very happy. It’s all quintessential Rooney, until the very end.Īfter finishing the last paragraph I flipped the page, thinking there must be more. Beautiful World, Where Are You? follows the entanglement of four characters: best friends Eileen and Alice, and their respective lovers, Simon and Felix, as they tempt and taunt while trying to reconcile contradictory impulses. Whether sexual or emotional, tension is the lifeblood of Rooney’s work, and her latest novel is no exception. I will feel horny and I will feel devastated. Between romps, they will stare longingly at each other from opposite ends of a party, while their friends discuss Marx over cheap red wine. There will be lots of hot sex between young, mostly straight Irish characters struggling to commit. There are certain things readers can expect from a Sally Rooney novel. Again there was a moral that asks us to treat others as we would like to be treated, and to think about how our actions could affect others. On top of that we also get a really sweet love story between two giants, all told with a gentle sense of humour. The second story was my personal favourite though as we got to spend some more time with Hilda as she discovered the hidden elf town that was right on her doorstep all along. It introduces a whole world full of incredible creatures so naturally and effortlessly, whilst also managing to fit in a nice moral about not judging others by their appearance. The first story is quite short, but an absolute joy to read. We also see our young adventurer encounter her very first rock troll, while in the second story we're introduced to both huge giants and tiny elves as Hilda learns more about the place she lives. The first introduces us to our main cast of characters Hilda, her mum, Twig the deerfox, and the Woodman. In this book we get the first two Hilda stories Hilda and The Troll, and Hilda and the Midnight Giant. As she adventures through the vast surroundings she meets a whole host of creatures, and new friends. Hilda is a little girl who lives with her mum in a small wooden shack in the wilderness. I really wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did. Nynaeve, Egwene and Elayne have been tasked by the armillion seat who is the leader of the ais sedie to find out who the black aja are in the tower. Nynaeve, Egwene and Elayne In Dragon Reborn He also becomes very skilled at defending himself with a quarter staff against the grey men who appear to be pursuing him from the moment he attempts to leave the white tower in Tar Valon. While doing his he discovers that he seems to be extremely lucky at dice and other events such as taking guesses. He eventually takes the risk to leave Tar Valon and give a note to the queen in Caemlyn for Elayne, Nynaeve and Egwene. After recovering, he becomes very hungry as the recovery takes much out of him. He still comes across as a hot-headed character and through the course of this entry to the series is still trying to just get away from the events that are going on around him. One thing that really stood out for me was the growth of Matt’s character from cover to cover, I enjoyed the story of his character and his recovery from the curse of the dagger that was placed on him in the very first book to the series Eye of the World. He has not gotten much character advancement up until this point. |
